Simple and Quick: Easy Homemade Pyramid Pan Pumpkin Dog Training Treats Recipe

Have you seen pyramid pans?  Looks easy, right?  Each pan has almost 500 tiny pyramids, and the dough you use is a simple batter, meaning that you can make a ton of bite-sized treats in a very quick time by simply whipping up a batter and spreading it into a mold!  Why didn’t anyone think of this sooner!

I’ve only just delved into the realm of pyramid pan treats, but I’m excited.  We follow a games/concept / reward-based training methodology and we go through a lot of treats this way.  Yes, we often use kibble as a treat, but often you need something that’s of higher value to your pup.  The highest value to both our dogs is dehydrated liver treats.  They both love them.  However, it’s easy to give them too many.  They’re awfully rich.  We also like to mix up the treats we give for nutrition purposes.

This was my first attempt at using a pyramid pan and developing a pyramid pan recipe.  I’m happy to report that both dogs loved them.  I used a true pyramid pan for the first batch and baked them for about 15 minutes.  For the 2nd batch, I used a small heart mold and baked them for about 20 mins as the molds were larger.  Both turned out well. In fact, I have made this recipe numerous times now as it’s a big hit with our dogs and very healthy.

Pyramid Pan Pumpkin Dog Training Treats Recipe

Prep Time: 5 mins

Cook Time: 15-25 mins

Bake: 375F/190C

Yield: about 1000

Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup pumpkin puree or roasted pumpkin
  • 1 cup tapioca flour or 1 1/2 cups dog-safe flour
  • 1/2 cup rice flour (omit if using 1 1/2 cups other flour)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ginger
  • about 1/2 cup water

Steps

  • Preheat oven to 375F/190C
  • In a medium bowl, add all ingredients except water.  Mix well.
  • Add small amounts of water until the batter reaches the consistency of a thick batter.  It should be like a thick pancake mix.  You may need slightly more or less than a 1/2 cup.
  • Place pyramid pan or molds on a cookie sheet
  • Using a spatula, spread the batter onto the mold, spreading it out as you go.  The batter should fill the molds but not overfill onto the top or they will remain attached after baking
  • Bake in the oven for 15 to 25 mins, depending on desired consistency and size of mold.  For a drier treat, bake longer.  For a larger treat, bake longer.
  • Remove from oven once treats are firm
  • Allow to cool slightly before removing from the pan or molds.
  • TIP: for easier de-molding / removal of treats, stretch the silicone pan in several directions before attempting to pop the treats out
  • Spread treats out in a single layer on a cookie sheet or on the counter to cool fully  (only if your dog doesn’t counter-surf!)
  • Allow to cool fully before placing in an air-tight container or ziplock in the fridge or freezer
