We have never been the type of people to dress up our dogs. But, we’ve always owned bigger dogs who don’t like to wear clothing. When Sienna first came to Canada from Mexico in late fall, she needed to wear sweaters. She hadn’t grown a winter coat because of the time of year she came, and she had obviously never experienced such cold weather or snow before. Thus began our introduction to dog fashion.
We’re still not big into dog fashion (or human fashion, for that matter!) but no one can deny that it is adorable to occasionally see a dog wearing a bowtie, a bandana or a sweater. As an added bonus, it makes for great pictures! After all, our furry friends deserve a touch of style and flair in their lives!
We’re excited to share a fun and easy project that will have your furry friend looking stylish in no time. In this step-by-step guide, we’ll show you how to create a quick and easy DIY dog bowtie without any sewing required. Whether you’re looking to spruce up your pet’s wardrobe or add a touch of charm to a special occasion, this no-sew dog bowtie will be the perfect accessory.
Benefits and Uses of a No-Sew Dog Bowtie
The beauty of this DIY dog bowtie project lies in its simplicity and convenience. By eliminating the need for sewing, you save time and can enjoy the creative process without any advanced skills. Additionally, this no-sew dog bowtie opens up a world of possibilities for your furry friend’s wardrobe. From everyday walks in the park to special occasions like birthdays or weddings, your dog will undoubtedly stand out with their stylish accessory.
Using the Bowtie
It’s important that your dog should never be afraid of or feel punished by wearing the bowtie. Most dogs are used to wearing collars and will tolerate the bowtie well or may not even really notice it. Not noticing it is the ideal reaction. If your dog looks worried, afraid, scared or anything else negative, remove the bowtie.
Do not leave the bowtie on the dog for excessive periods of time and do not leave your dog unattended while wearing the bowtie. Keep safety in mind at all times.
Materials and Variations
We’ve made this bowtie using hemming tape. Hemming tape permanently secures two pieces of fabric together and fuses them using the heat of an iron. Alternatively, you could easily sew this project, use fabric tape or use another fabric adhesive.
Hot glue can also be used in steps 7, 8 and 9. Although these are no-sew instructions, I chose to hand sew these parts as there were limited stitches required, and it was easier than looking for my fabric glue or glue gun (if I’m going to be completely honest!!)
You can add various embellishments to the bowtie including ribbon, lace, beads, buttons, adhesive rhinestones or anything else you can think of. Get creative and enjoy!
Materials Required
- Fabric of your choice (approximately 4x the size of your final bowtie)
- Scissors
- Iron
- Fabric glue, fabric adhesive tape/hemming tape and/or needle and thread
- Measuring tape
- Velcro, hidden buttons, button or adhesive fasteners
- Optional: Decorative embellishments (such as buttons or iron-on patches)
Step-by-Step Instructions
Choosing the fabric: select a fabric that is durable, pet-friendly, and matches your dog’s personality. Consider using cotton, polyester, or any other lightweight fabric that is easy to work with.
- Determine the size of the bowtie you would like to make. Do you want it to be oversized, or small and dainty? Cut a piece of fabric to approximately 4x the size of your final bowtie
- Lie the fabric pattern side down. Along the longest side, find the center and fold both sides into the centre
- Iron the sides and use fabric tape or glue to secure the sides and create a seam in the middle
- Rotate fabric. Fold cut edges toward the center. Iron the sides and use fabric tape or glue to secure the sides and create a seam in the middle
- Flip the fabric over so the side without seams is showing. Gather in the center, gently pulling and adjusting until you are satisfied with the results. Secure with string
- Using a spare piece of fabric, cut to a large narrow strip. Fold edges inward and iron. Fold once more to cover both seams and seal with fabric tape or glue
- Secure the strip to the bowtie with the seam facing the bow using fabric tape or thread
- Wrap the strip around the bow until desired thickness is reached. Secure on the back side with fabric glue or thread
- Secure another strip or velcro to the backside of the bow to attach to the collar. Cut the length to wrap around your dog’s collar
- If using buttons or snaps, secure using adhesive or thread
- Add any desired embellishments. Add to your dog’s collar and enjoy!
