Wholesome Delights: Crafting Applesauce for Dogs

In the world of pet care, crafting treats for our furry friends is an art that combines love and nutrition. One delightful way to pamper your pooch is by creating homemade, sugar-free applesauce dog treats. In this guide, we’ll explore the reasons behind opting for wholesome, homemade delights and provide you with a simple yet nutritious unsweetened applesauce recipe that your canine companion will undoubtedly love.

Why Homemade Dog Treats Matter

Commercial dog treats and foods are convenient, but they often come with hidden additives and excess sugars that may not align with your dog’s nutritional needs. Homemade treats offer the advantage of control, allowing you to tailor ingredients to suit your dog’s specific requirements and taste preferences.

They also tend to be more cost-effective!  A bag of apples will cost me around $5.  Less if they are on sale or if I can get them from a local farm when they’re in season.  On the flip side, a bottle of sugar-free or unsweetened applesauce will cost me around $8 for half the amount made from the bag of apples!  Price-wise, it just makes sense.

By making your own, you also ensure there are no unnecessary additives like artificial sweeteners (make sure you carefully check store-bought applesauce to xylitol!) or preservatives.

Your dog might also appreciate different textures!  For example, you may want a pureed applesauce for lick mats and to add to homemade treats, but may prefer a chunky applesauce in their stuffed Kong or Toppl or in their homemade food.

By opting for a “no sugar added” approach, you ensure that your dog enjoys a treat that is not only delicious but also promotes their overall well-being.

The Benefits of Applesauce for Dogs

Let’s be clear – this isn’t truly sugar-free.  However, it has natural sugars which are significantly healthier than cane sugars.  Apples contain fructose, as well as glucose and sucrose in smaller amounts, giving apples their naturally sweet taste.  The natural sugars contained in apples are part of a nutritious package that contributes to your dog’s overall health.

Applesauce serves as a nutritious base for dog treats, packed with essential vitamins and minerals. Choosing a  variant with no added sugar further enhances the health benefits, as it eliminates unnecessary sugars that can be detrimental to your dog’s health. An unsweetened applesauce recipe is not only a tasty indulgence but also a mindful choice for pet owners who prioritize their dog’s health.

Selecting the Right Ingredients

Before diving into the recipe, it’s crucial to choose the right ingredients. Opt for fresh apples, ensuring they are free from seeds and cores. Apple seeds contain amygdalin which is converted into cyanide, which can be fatal in sufficient amounts.  Quality ingredients contribute to the overall appeal and nutritional value of your homemade treats.

You can use any type of apple.  Fuji apples tend to contain the most natural sweetness, while Granny Smith apples are more towards the tart side.

Crafting Your Applesauce Dog Recipe

Creating applesauce for your dog is a straightforward, easy process. Begin by coring and chopping the apples (removing the skin is optional), then simmer them in a bit of water until they’re soft. Mash or blend the apples into a smooth consistency, and voilà – you have your applesauce. Add dog-safe ingredients like carrots or blueberries, or herbs and spices like cinnamon or thyme for an extra burst of flavour and nutrition.

Variations on Traditional Applesauce

Why not change up your traditional applesauce and add in some additional flavour and/or nutrition!  Try any of the following, a mix, or add in your own dog-safe ingredients!  Just add them to the applesauce as they cook, or mix them in after cooling.

  • Fruit: blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, mango, pineapple, lemon (including zest!).  Almost any fruit you can think of (except grapes!) can be added.  Be sure to remove any large seeds and skin if necessary.
  • Vegetables: pumpkin or squash, grated or diced carrots, beets, spinach.  Almost any dog-safe vegetable can be added.  Note that some may require a slightly longer cooking time, like sweet potato
  • Herbs and Spices: while cinnamon is a classic, other herbs like thyme, rosemary, ginger or mint are also delicious additions. You could also add a dash of vanilla.  Or if you’re making this for yourself, try a hint of cayenne!
  • Chopped Nuts or Seeds: Chia seeds, ground flaxseed, chopped almonds, pecans or walnuts would all be delicious additions
  • Sweeteners: You don’t need to add a sweetener, but if you really want to, opt for a natural sweetener such as honey or maple syrup.  A little will go a long way
  • Dried Fruit or Coconut: dried chopped fruits such as dates, apricots, cranberries or cherries are a great addition and add a bit of additional sweetness.  Stay clear of raisins, as these are not dog-friendly.  Dried coconut is also a great addition
  • Dairy: after the applesauce has cooled, you can add dairy products such as yogurt, kefir, or even a bit of cheese.  Use sparingly, as too much dairy is not great for dogs

Unsweetened Applesauce Recipe

Prep Time: 10 minutes (longer for a larger batch!)

Cook Time: 45 -60 mins

Yield: about 1/2 cup (125mL)per medium apple

Ingredients

  • Apples, any variety
  • Water
  • Optional add-ins (see Variations section above)

Steps

  1. Wash and core apples, ensuring all seeds and core are removed
  2. Remove skin if preferred (if you’re pureeing the applesauce or chopping the apples finely, removing the skin isn’t necessary.  The skin contains a lot of healthy nutrients!
  3. Chop the apples into chunks (large chunks will take a little longer to cook but will result in a chunky, thick applesauce.  Smaller chunks will cook and break down quicker)
  4. Place chopped apples into a saucepan along with anything else you’re adding in
  5. Add a little water to the bottom of the pot (many recipes contain no water.  I prefer to add just a little bit to help get things going.  It will evaporate).
  6. Cook over medium-low heat for 45-60 minutes, stirring regularly
  7. Once cooked, allow it to cool then puree it, leave it chunky or mash it a little for it to end up somewhere in between pureed and chunky!

Storage

Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days or in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 3 months.  TIP: I prefer to package it in smaller containers so that I can take out smaller amounts as I need it, or freeze large ice cube trays before transferring to a sealable bag.

How to use it

There are so many things you can do with homemade applesauce.  It’s a great ingredient to have on hand for your dog:
