Picky Eaters? Try These Irresistible Cranberry Dog Treat Recipe
Homemade dog treats are a fantastic way to show your furry friend some love while ensuring they get wholesome, nutritious snacks. When it comes to combining health benefits and deliciousness, cranberries are an excellent choice for our canine companions.
These cranberry treats never last long in our house. When making these I often use a mix of dried and fresh or frozen cranberries to give a variety in taste and texture.

The Power of Homemade Treats
Why settle for store-bought when you can prepare treats in your kitchen? The beauty of homemade treats lies in the control over ingredients. You know precisely what’s going into your pup’s snacks, allowing you to tailor recipes to their specific needs. And when cranberries enter the mix, you’re not just providing a tasty treat – you’re offering a powerhouse of nutrients.
Cranberry Benefits for Canines
Cranberries aren’t just a human favourite; they’re also fantastic for our furry friends. Rich in antioxidants and vitamins, these little red gems can support urinary health, aid in digestion, and even contribute to a healthy coat for your dog. Incorporating cranberries into homemade treats adds both flavour and a healthy boost to your pup’s diet.Â
Additionally, their anti-inflammatory properties may contribute to overall immune system support, potentially benefiting your dog’s health in various ways.

Crafting Delicious Homemade Treats
Let’s jump into creating these delightful snacks. To make homemade cranberry dog treats, gather ingredients like oat flour, cranberries (fresh, frozen, dried or a combination!), natural sweeteners like honey or applesauce, and coconut oil. Blend these wholesome components, shape them into bite-sized treats, and bake until golden brown. Voila! You’ve got nutritious, homemade cranberry dog treats ready to delight your pup’s taste buds.
While cranberries can be served fresh, frozen or dried, cranberry sauce should be avoided due to additives and excess sugars.
Recipe Notes & Tips
- Large cookie cutters were used in the preparation of this recipe. Smaller cookies or treats will bake faster. Likewise, thinner cookies will bake faster than thicker cookies
- If you don’t have any cookie cutters, use the rim of a glass, or even cut them with a pizza cutter or a knife. Your dog does not care what shape the treat is! They only care how it tastes (and they will love the taste!)
- If you don’t have a rolling pin, look for something else similarly shaped in your house. A long can or bottle, perhaps? It a pinch, press out with your hands or with the bottom of a bowl or plate. Again, your dog doesn’t care if they’re exactly even and won’t be bothered by this approach
- Want to change it up? Consider switching out the honey for applesauce. Or try switching out the cranberries for another fruit like blueberries. Keep in mind that while craisins (dried cranberries, ideally without sugar) are dog-safe, raisins are not safe for dogs to eat
- Want a vegan treat? Switch out the egg for chia or flax seeds. Simply grind 1 tbsp of seeds and mix with 2.5 tbsp warm water for each egg. Mix well, and allow to sit for 5 mins before using in recipe

Recipe: Cranberry Dog Treats
Prep Time: 15 mins
Cook Time: 20-25 mins
Yield: About 18 large
Ingredients
- 2 1/2 cups (625 mL) dog-safe flour + more for rolling
- 1/2 cup (125 mL) oats
- 3/4 cup (180 mL) cranberries (fresh, frozen, dried or a combination)
- 2 eggs
- 2 tbsp (30 mL) honey
- 1/4 cup (60 mL) coconut oil, melted
- 1/2 cup (125mL) water
Steps
- Preheat oven to 350°F / 177°C
- Prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper
- In a medium bowl, add all ingredients except water
- Add water a little at a time until the dough comes together
- Lightly flour a surface, and place half the dough onto the surface
- Knead briefly to ensure the dough has no remaining dry or wet spots within it. If needed, add a bit more water if the dough is too dry, or a bit more flour if the dough is too sticky or damp. Knead thoroughly after adding additional ingredients
- Add additional flour to the surface if necessary, and add flour to the rolling pin. Roll out dough to approximately 1/8″ (4mm) to 1/4″ (6mm) thick
- Dip cookie cutters in flour and press the floured cookie cutter into the dough. Move the cutout to the prepared baking sheet
- Repeat until all dough is used, rerolling leftover dough from cutouts
- Bake for 20-25 minutes or until slightly browned around the edges
- Once the treats are done, remove the baking sheet from the oven and allow the cookies to cool completely before serving or storing. If desired, for additional crispiness and longer cookie life, leave treats in the oven after turning it off, leaving them to dehydrate in the oven for several hours or overnight as the oven cools
Storage
Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 7 days (longer if dehydrated after baking). Freeze for up to 3 months.Â

Tips for Success
Achieving paw-some treats requires a bit of finesse. Ensure the cranberries are dog-safe (no artificial sweeteners), and monitor portion sizes to avoid overindulgence. Additionally, store treats properly in an airtight container to maintain freshness and quality.
As always, if you have any concerns about feeding your dog any of the ingredients or any concerns with possible allergens, please consult your vet.Â
Conclusion
Homemade cranberry dog treats are a labour of love that offers immense joy to both you and your furry companion. The act of preparing these treats not only demonstrates care but also ensures your pup receives nutritious snacks made with love. So, put on your apron, gather your ingredients, and get ready to watch your pup enjoy the deliciousness of homemade cranberry treats!
