Wholesome Homemade Pumpkin Oatmeal Baked Dog Treats

These were the first homemade dog treats I ever baked, and likely the treats I have baked the most often.  For a while I was baking them every other week.  Our ladies just go crazy for them!  With minimal ingredients, you can feel good about serving them, and they are tasty and healthy.

I also love the long shelf life on them!  If properly dried out they can last for up to 6 months on the counter in an airtight container!  Not that they would ever make it that long!

You can easily double this recipe if you want to make more at once, too.  Since this is a rolled recipe, they can also be cut into adorable shapes using cookie cutters like these adorable Easter themed ones.  As I am baking these for my own dogs, I usually just grab a pizza cutter and haphazardly cut them into rectangles.  It’s quicker that way, and our girls don’t care what shape they are!  They just want them in their bellies  😊.

The Benefits of Pumpkin and Oatmeal for Dogs

Pumpkin and oatmeal are two ingredients that offer a myriad of benefits for our canine companions. Pumpkin is rich in fibre, which can aid in digestion and promote overall gut health. It’s also packed with essential vitamins and minerals, including vitamin A, vitamin C, and potassium. Oatmeal, on the other hand, is easily digestible and provides a good source of carbohydrates and protein for your dog. Together, these ingredients make for a nutritious and wholesome treat that your pup will devour.

Ingredients and Substitutions

This recipe comes together with only 5 ingredients, making it a great staple recipe.

Oat flour can be made by grinding oats in your food processor or blender. Alternatively, you could choose to use another dog-safe flour such as chickpea or even whole wheat.

Applesauce can be homemade or store-bought. Try to make sure it has no added sweetener, and definitely make sure it does not contain xylitol as this can be deadly to dogs. If you choose to make your own applesauce, we have easy to follow instructions here.

If you’re not able to find pumpkin or don’t have any available, you can easily substitute it with something of a similar consistency. Consider baked sweet potatoes or squash as an alternative, or even a carrot mash.

Description

Ingredients

Steps

  1. Preheat the oven to 300F/150C.  Line a large cookie sheet with parchment paper
  2. Grind the oats into rough flour in a food processor or blender
  3. In a bowl, mix the pumpkin, eggs, applesauce, and cinnamon. Add oats.  Mix thoroughly (should resemble a thick cookie dough)
  4. Lightly flour surface with dog-friendly flour (I have used oat flour from ground-up oats or chickpea flour)
  5. Knead on the counter, adding additional flour until dough forms a ball.  You are looking for a consistency that is suitable for rolling
  6. Roll rough out to 1/4″ thick or less, and cut into shapes using cookie cutters, a glass or a pizza cutter
  7. Place on cookie sheets.  These cookies do not rise or spread, so minimal space is needed between treats
  8. Bake for about 50-60 minutes.  Cookies should be lightly browned and dry
  9. Remove from the oven and cool completely before moving

Storage

  • Store in an air-tight container for up to 6 months for completely dry, crisp treats
  • Note: Once cooled, if treats have not reached desired dryness, they can be placed back into the oven to dry out further
